Atoms bond to form more stable substances. The most stable an atom can be is if it can have the maximum number of electrons in its outer orbit. It can achieve this be either
1. giving up or taking an electron from another atom. This is ionic bonding.
2. sharing electrons with another atom. This is covalent bonding
