Given a chemical formula of a compound, how do you tell whether it is bonded by an ionic bond or covalent bond?

In grade 10, I was just told that ionic bonds are formed between a metal and a non metal. And that a covalent bond is formed between two non metals.

But I later found out that this does not always apply.

So given a chemical formula, how can one deduce whether it is ionic or covalent?
