What "insurance" do i need when buying a used car?

I'm planning on buying a used car. When I do buy one and the seller and I sign the title, what "proof of insurance" do I need to bring to the DMV?

Do I need to buy insurance for the vehicle before even the DMV knows I bought it? I am already insured under my parents insurance plan. I have an insurance card with their cars on it.

Your parents would know and would need to be consulted before you add another car under their policy. Each vehicle has a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Your car insurance needs to have that # and some other info to register that car as insured. After that you'll get the insurance card which is used as proof of insurance to take to DMV.
You need the insurance to be driving the car.
Your current insurance only allows you to drive your parents' existing cars.
