How much before should my finance and i get married immigration?

My finance and i are planning to get married. when we do im going to start the paper work for his USA resedency. He can be here legally because he has a visa. How long would it be good to be married before we do file it? I want to start the paper work next year in June.. When should we get married? Can he work while we wait here?
Can we get married and start paper work right away?

What kind of visa does he hold and what is his limit on departure date? If he is on a tourist visa or visa waiver program and he marries, he must return home to his own country while you file for his visa. So we need to know his visa type!

If he is on a visa which currently allows him to work such as H1-b, and he marries, he can continue to work for the employer which got him the visa. He has to meet all visa restrictions until he gets his green card before he can find another job. If his current visa does not allow work, is not an employment visa, then he can't work until he gets EAD or green card (@6 months), then gets his Social Security card (about 4 weeks), and then he can join over 31 million Americans who are desperately seeking work. The real unemployment rate has exceeded 22% for over a year now.

So.... we need more info here. What kind of visa does he currently hold?
