Chemical bonding occurs when two atoms "fight" over a pair of electrons. The strength with which each atom attracts a pair of valence electrons is measured by its electronegativity. Metals generally have very low electronegativities, while nonmetals have high electronegativities. When the difference between electronegativities of the atoms involved is great (over 1.7), the atom with greater electronegativity is able to completely take the pair of electrons from the atom with lower electronegativity. This is usually the case when the pair of atoms involve a metal and a nonmetal. The nonmetal simply takes electrons away from the metal in order to complete its valence shell to achieve a complete octet and become a negative ion. The metal loses all its valence electrons (the entire last shell) and the shell underneath already contains a complete octet. The metal becomes a positive ion. The electrostatic attraction between the positive and the negative ion is what keeps them together and is the essence of the ionic bond.
