We shopped around for a while and found that GEICO had the best rates. I live in the US, and if you do also, you should give them a try.

Just make sure you have the declarations page from both your current auto and homeowners policies in front of you when you get a quote. You need to be sure you are getting an quote that is apples to apples on what you are paying for now. Most times, the person giving you a quote on the phone will drop off extras like rental and towing, and quote you with high deductibles on Comprehensive and Collision. If those features are different from the policy you have now, then you really are not getting enough information to evaluate the quote they give you.

"I've got this friend see; s/he's got the AIDS."

"One day when she went to get her medications at the drugstore, the druggist told hir it would be ,300. for this months supply. Thinking there must be some sort of mistake -- as s/he'd never paid more than the co-pay for years -- s/he called her insurance provider (yes, s/he had insurance) Hir insurance provider said hir plan had been restructured and these HIV/AIDS medications, being protected by US patent laws, had no generic equivalent and were therefor no longer covered."

"What a pisser, huh?"

"Funny thing though... s/he still goes to the pharmacy everyday, hands in hir prescriptions -- once filled, admits s/he can't pay -- then leaves... 'observed by all the other customers'"

"Ya see, s/he thinks it's important for folks to know what's going on."

Update 2012-09-04: Since posting screenshot on Facebook, a friend from college who has spent years doing mathematical modeling of the AIDS epidemic and cost projections has the following response:

"I do think that losing coverage for life saving medications is a huge problem, but I feel like this story is unecessarily inflammatory.

... The real issue is the lack of health care coverage. it's a basic human right, that should just be provided by government.

... a more important issue would be to raise awareness on what would happen if medicaid finding was cut... medicaid covers hiv meds for more than 50% of the + population, with ryan white picking up 30% (the rest are privately insured). ryan white gets .1 billion a year from the federal government, most of which is spent on adap programs (aids drug assisstsnce). in the time of federal budget cutbacks, you can imagine that these programs are vulnerable. obama reauthorized the ryan white care act in 2009, but the next reauthorization is up in the air, particularly if a certain party wins the white house....

... anyways, whoever knows this person should let them know about RWCA. hiv+ and esrd patients are basically the only people in the us who are guaranteed coverage."
