What happens when you get into a fender bender with no insurance?

What are my options if my car insurance lapsed and I got into a fender bender? There is no police report but the other parties insurance says i owe them $ 4300. I'm in California, if that matters.

Are you sure the accident is YOUR fault?? Just because you don't have insurance (which is illegal in CA, by the way) doesn't mean YOU have to pay the repairs. However, if this is YOUR fault you will have to pay for the repairs out of your pocket, but you can demand 3 estimates and choose the lowest one. It is illegal to drive without insurance in CA, so the other insurer may report this situation. If you don't pay, they can take you to small claims court and get a judgement against you. There's no way of winning this unless it's the other person's fault. Good Luck!

allegory: a visual symbol representing an abstract idea

neither the lady in the crash hat nor i am really there. she was in New Zealand, i was behind the camera. the insurance agence really was there. all the rest is photons.

oh, no, since you were wondering, i have never met this lady. she and i crossed paths one windy afternoon as i came out of the museum in Wellington and she was waiting for someone, wearing boots and a skidlid. here, she's become monochrome, though i'm certain she's a colourful person really. i hope she's enjoying her life.

meanwhile the man in the blue teeshirt has gone, taking with him his neurones and neuroses and neurobics.

as far as i know, the insurance agency is still there.

Cue: theme tune for "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly".
