The investment bankers I deal with have a variety of backgrounds. And there are also a variety of jobs in investment banks. So there is no "clear" path.
The skills required to succeed include an ability to recognize opportunity from a group of observations that at first may seem unrelated. You then need to develop a strategy and, in most cases, convince others of the merits of the strategy. Finally, implementation is critical. The shores are littered with the carcasses of those with good ideas who have not been able to execute strategies well. Also integrity is vital for longevity as an investment banker - once you gain a bad reputation you will never lose it.
In terms of educational background, some combinations of commercial law, finance, engineering, actuarial science, economics and maybe even some psychology might be useful. But I also know a medical practitioner who gave up medicine to join an investment bank in a specialist role that analyzes health care opportunities.
it's more an issue of having a solid university degree and being able think laterally.
