Why do we call formal education an investment in human capital? How is it like an investment in physical capital?

Based on my simplistic understanding of the topic... I'd say that by educating a population, the people are more able to create, expand, and otherwise contribute to the workforce and the economy - thus acting as capital of a sort. Maybe I'm missing the real idea of the question, but that's my answer to the best of my ability.
