How do you determine whether double or triple bond? and Bond Bug

How do you determine whether double or triple bond?

For instance, in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), the oxygen atoms have a single bond between them. Why not a double bond?

In carbon monoxide, there is a double bond between C and O. Why not a triple bond + one long pair on each atom (instead of double bond and 2 lone pairs to each)

Thank you.
