Why do some atoms bother bonding with others?
Hi,
I thinking of atoms with 1, 2 and 4 valance electrons.
EG Why does hydrogen bother bonding with oxygen to form a water compound. Is it not easier just for eight hydrogen atoms to bond together and ignore the oxygen atoms?

Answer by Caroline Miller
1) H doesn't have the energy levels/orbitals to make 8 bonds, it only has 1 electron. so, it's choices are H2 or binding to another atom
2) elements bond to obtain stability. H• is not as stable as H:X
