What is the advantage of hiring someone who is bonded?

I am looking to hire a person to clean my house once a month. I have narrowed it down to 2 people. One is bonded and one is not. The bonded person is more expensive. Is it worth hiring the bonded person and how do I get proof of the bond?

Let's start with, what is a bond.

A bond is a three party guarantee. It's a promise, from the insurance company, that the obligor - the cleaning person - will, or will not, do something, for the obligee - the person who they are bonded to (a client, or the state, or a bank possibly). If they violate the terms of the bond, a preset amount - the penalty amount - is paid by the insurance company, to the obligee.

If you are not the obligee - in which case, you receive a copy of the bond - then you are not PARTY to the bond, and can never collect on the bond, so the fact that they are bonded, is just sort of like a reference on a resume. It looks great, but can't possibly affect you.

If you are not the obligor of the bond - meaning, it's given to YOU, and names YOU as the person who collects the penalty - then the fact that they are bonded doesn't give YOU any protection.

Is it worth it to hire the bonded person? Maybe, because if they're bondable, they're not as likely to steal from you. If they DO steal, though, the bond doesn't give YOU any protection or benefits. You can't get proof of the bond, unless YOU are the obligee.
