What gives us the right to tax people?

In the united states all citizens are members of the government, so effectively when a tax is imposed we are all responsible. By what right do we tax people? Even more confusing is what gives us the right to impose different rates of taxation on different people?

I'm not asking about what the law on the matter says I already know that we have taxation and it's a progressive system and that income tax is in our constitution. I am asking from where get the moral authority to do these things in the first place.
