How would an auto loan work if you wanted to be financed through your bank and not the car dealer?

Would I have to get the bank loan first then pay the dealer?

That is correct. You apply for the loan first and once the loan is approved, the money is deposited into your bank account. You then write a check for the full amount to the car dealership and you only make payments to your bank. This is a much better route because you have a chance to shop for better interest rates.
