What is the theory behind the stock market investment?

I do not fully understand the investment principle. For example, I want to start off a retail business that sells electronics,the investment require me to put $ 500,000. Now, what if I invest $ 500,000 into best-buy stock? according to the principle it could be the same outcome? of course, having in mind the best-buy stock goes well.

In other words, the fact I invest in bestbuy makes me an electronic investor? can I use this principle to swicht industries without having to start off tangibles business?
