What happens to a cosigner on a student loan if the student unfortunately passes or dies? What if it is a private student loan?

the co-signer is responsible for the loan in the event that the primary borrower cannot pay. I read an article about a father who was homeless or basically homeless because he co-signed a private student loan for his son and a year after the son graduated, he died but the father was still on the hook for the entire amount.
