How come banks no longer give a free gift when opening a new account?

Years ago, banks would give a free gift, such as a toast machine or a piggy bank when opening up a new account with them. I notice that banks don't do this anymore. They don't give squat. Why is this?

it's no longer cost efficient. bank accounts are needed to get by.
