The last bank in Carshalton closed on December 11th 2009 despite local protests and appeals. Barclays' profits in the first 9 months of the year were 4.5 billion pounds. Interviewed by the BBC on 21 Dec 2009, Barclays' Chairman said that "[we] need big strong banks to make the world go round". Not so concerned about service to local communities it seems.
