Table salt NaCl is held together by ionic bonds. We can determine bond types by subtracting the electronegativities of the bonding elements. Cl = 3.16, Na = 0.93 (3.16-.93 = 2.23). Generally, if the difference in electronegativity is greater than 1.67, the bond is more ionic than covalent.
