First things first: you need to examine the stocks' fundamentals. Look at things like company cash flow, Earnings per Share (EPS), Price to Earnings Ratio (P/E Ratio), Return on Assets (ROA), Debt to Equity Ratio, etc. There are a lot of other fundamentals to look at, but those will get you started. Investopedia has more information on fundamental analysis (see the sources referneced below).
After doing the fundamental analysis of a stock, you'll want to get a more rounded view of it by looking at the trading and price history of the stock, as well as compare it to other stocks in the same sector and industry. That's what we call technical analysis. By analyzing the trends of a stock/sector/industry over time, you can start to see patterns and signals that give you insight into the best time to buy/sell. Find a good stock tracking software to do the heavy lifting of the data processing for you - there are some free and paid options out there, but you get what you pay for. I recommend High Growth Stock Investor software, which has a 60-day free trial.

Christmas stocking for my elder nephew's fiancee--finished with time to spare! (Ashley is in vet school, so the cats seem appropriate.)
Stocking is about 16 inches tall, 10 inches wide at the base, 8 inches wide at the top.
