Where are the covalent bonds, and where are the ionic bonds?
In a compound that contains a polyatomic ion, there are both covalent bons and ionic bonds. Where are the covalent bonds, and where are the ionic bonds?

Answer by QEChem
The polyatomic ion would consist of covalently bonded atoms, and the bond between the polyatomic ion and the other ion would be ionic.
For example, KNO3, consisting of a polyatomic anion, NO3-, and a cation, K+.
N-O bonds are covalent, the K-N bond is ionic.
This isn't always the case, but it's not a bad general rule.
