Answer by pants on backwards
I am Australian.
If you lived here....ALL medical treatment in public hospitals is FREE.
We pay 1.5% medicare levy which is automatically deducted from our salaries.
The unemployed and pensioners pay nothing.
There is also private insurance available for those that prefer private hospitals....but the public system is excellent.
My friend (a guy on a pension) recently had a heart attack......he was taken by ambulance to a small country hospital 50 kms away...then flown 300 kms by helicopter to a major hospital...had a heart operation and was in that hospital for 6 weeks.
What would that have cost in the US?
Here it cost absolutely NOTHING....not a cent!
That service is available to all Australians.
We do not have to fear some huge rip-off medical bill after hospital treatment.
The reason I'm telling you this, is not to knock the US, but if "Obama-care" is similar to our system.....I suggest you jump at it!
EDIT...@flower....thank you for clarifying that.
I have seen and heard those that protest against "Obama-care" say things like " we don't want socialised medicine in America."
It sounded like they were against something like the system we have.
I you have helped me to understand that unfortunately the medical system we have is not possible in the US.
Do you have any public hospitals funded, and basically owned by the government, or are all hospitals privately owned?
