How do investments work? and Save Darfur protest at Franklin Templeton Investments

How do investments work?

I'm a year away from graduating college and I would like to know more about how investments work. I'm a history major so I don't know much about business and all that. How do investments work? What type of growth do they have? Do you invest in stocks or...? What are the top 'things' to invest in? Do average people invest? An overall summary of investments would be great. Thanks!

The investment is the money you are putting into the business and after a while you gain a profit out of it. People who are investing in businesses are buying shares. Anyone can buy shares and many people buy shares, including average people. You don't have to sell the shares to earn the money - businesses are paying out dividends few times a year. The top investments are the ones which are not risky and where the business is profitable. The share price and the amount of dividends paid out will constantly change upon internal factors so you cannot really say what exactly is a top investment. It will also depend on how much money you have invested and how many shares you have bought. Hope this helps!
