The best way to rob a bank is to own one (Bill Moyers and William K. Black)

Bill Moyers interviews William K. Black, a former bank regulator who helped save our asses during the savings and loan mess. Black argues that the financial collapse should be regarded as the result of systematic fraud, i.e., that the results of the profligate lending practices of the housing bubble were so profitable at the outset and so unsustainable as to constitute fraud, criminal betrayal of trust for financial gain.

www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04032009/watch.html
It's a great piece of TV journalism. Watch it.

Here's a particularly topical snippet, not directly related to the fraud allegations, but worth highlighting all the same:

BILL MOYERS: But I can point you to statements by Larry Summers, who was then Bill Clinton's Secretary of the Treasury, or the other Clinton Secretary of the Treasury, Rubin. I can point you to suspects in both parties, right?

WILLIAM K. BLACK: There were two really big things, under the Clinton administration. One, they got rid of the law that came out of the real-world disasters of the Great Depression. We learned a lot of things in the Great Depression. And one is we had to separate what's called commercial banking from investment banking. That's the Glass-Steagall law. But we thought we were much smarter, supposedly. So we got rid of that law, and that was bipartisan. And the other thing is we passed a law, because there was a very good regulator, Brooksley Born, that everybody should know about and probably doesn't. She tried to do the right thing to regulate one of these exotic derivatives that you're talking about. We call them C.D.F.S. And Summers, Rubin, and Phil Gramm came together to say not only will we block this particular regulation. We will pass a law that says you can't regulate. And it's this type of derivative that is most involved in the AIG scandal. AIG all by itself, cost the same as the entire Savings and Loan debacle.

Watch the clip.

Best mid-term investment in Ontario, Canada?

I have given up my life-long dream of getting an exotic car, and by the end of the summer, I should have approximately 60k to play with without putting me in corners. I'm new to the world of investment. I know there are many many types, bonds, stocks, rrsp, house, tax free savings account, gic...etc I'm looking for mid term investment (~5years preferrably). If you can make me a suggestion as to what I'd be best off looking into, that'd be great.

Also, does anyone know if having bank account in the US will show up on personal profile? (let's say a lawsuit is thrown at me and for whatever reason I need to 'hide' my savings?)

You might look into investment grade corporate bonds. A reasonably safe investment that yields about 5% more than government bonds. A corporate bond mutual fund will give you the necessary diversification.

citibank, reverse stock split? and Far shot of the railway rolling stock

citibank, reverse stock split?

citibank's stock sold at a low of $ 0.97cents as of last week end. the stock advanced to 3.08 on wednesday.

management at citibank suddenly issued a statement that they may execute a reverse stock split. the stock immediately fell to $ 2.60. the reverse stock split statement was tantamount to a pilot turning off the engine when maximum lift was needed.

my question; why did management at citibank issue a statement about a reverse stock split?
preferred share holders can't vote unless unless the stock is converted to common shares.

i think we all need to remember that the government loaned money to citibank at the request of citibank. citibank went to the government for help and they got help in the forms of loans from the government.
citibank's stock is worthless because they invested in worthless paper.

government loans have no effect on the price of the stock.

if the government had no supported citibank with loans, they would have gone bankrupt.

Ford financing versus Honda financing? and 2012 Social Finance Forum: Measuring up

Ford financing versus Honda financing?

Is it easier to get approved for a lease/finance thru Ford than Honda? Because I have absolutely no credit.. better yet bad credit.. and I was able to lease a brand new civic with a reasonable contract. I want to be able to either lease/finance a Mustang. The honda salesman told me, that anyone who can do some sort of down payment is surely able to get a loan. I can care less about the interest... because I'll be able to refinance.

Finance best answer:

Answer by Miss Mota Mouth
A lease on a Ford is going to be a bit different than on a Honda because with a lease you are making payments on what the expected depreciation will be on the car over the terms of the lease. Fords will surely depreciate more than Hondas but it depends on what the price of the car is that you choose. I am sure that if you have the money and a deposit and a history of a successfully paid lease before that Ford will be fine with leasing to you but they may not be as willing to sell to you through their financing department. You should look into getting financed through a bank, credit union or State Farm even first and the compare what they offer you if you decide to purchase rather than lease.
