hey i'm wondering if it is smart to try to get into investment banking even though our economy sucks?

In case you haven't been reading the news recently.... the economy is improving... the stock market is making highs it hasn't seen since 2008. Unemployment is improving (not enough, not fast enough). Companies are recording record profits. An investment banker needs to be on top of what's going on in the world of business. I think it's a great time to become an investment banker.

Much of CEO pay has taken the form of stock options rather than grants of stock.Which form of compensation gives the CEO greater incentive to increase shareholder value: one million dollars in stock or one million dollars worth of stock options?

There is a big difference. Unless the company goes bankrupt, the stock will always be worth something. Options can easily lose all their value if the stock goes down even a small persentage.

Options are a leverage tool. Options are usually issued with a strike price based on the stock's value when the options were issued. So if the stock goes up, the gain on the options will likely be much larger than the stock. If the stock goes down, then the options will be worthless (assuming that their strike price was based on the stock's original value, as I had stated).

To truly tie CEO compenstaion to performance, the best idea (for the shareholders) is to issue the CEO options with a long vesting period that goes beyond the time the CEO leaves the company. This way, if the CEO's decison increase LONG-TERM stock value, he will profit. If not, no bonus. As is clearly evident in the financail sector, short-term profits often come at the expense of long-term viabilty.

Which major is more wise to pursue, a major in accounting or a major in finance or both?

As of right now, I am becoming more and more uncertain on what I want to do for a future career. I am having my hands gripped onto a major in accounting but I am having second thoughts. My other alternative majors would be finance and business but I don't have any real hard evidence as in why finance and business majors are better for me than a accounting major.

I would stick with accounting. The other two majors are very soft, and undergraduate degrees in either are not highly valued. Undergraduate business degrees, in particular, are widely viewed as worthless by employers. At least with accounting you get a real skill set than can help you find a job in a tough economy.
